- Preparing for winter weather in recent FCS Health Bulletins. Wearing appropriate layers, heating homes safely, and avoiding hypothermia.
- As temperatures drop to these extreme levels, water pipes are some of the first systems to fail. Pipes, especially those in exterior walls will freeze, then burst as temperatures recover. Extension Offices/Facilities are not immune to Extreme Cold. To help avoid unnecessary losses, it is recommended to leave faucets dripping (at home and Extension facilities) during Extreme Cold Weather events and advise clients to do the same. In addition, leaving cabinet doors open under faucets will allow additional heat to these areas. Finally, know where your “Water Cutoff Value” is located. If pipes do burst, turning off the water asap can reduce damage. While following these simple steps will not guarantee your pipes will remain unfrozen – it will help. https://www.ready.gov/winter-weather
